Pakistan Navy Bolsters Fleet with Induction of Second Babur-Class MILGEM Corvette, PNS KHAIBAR

Karachi, Pakistan – In a significant boost to its naval capabilities, the Pakistan Navy has officially inducted the second advanced Babur-class (MILGEM) corvette, PNS KHAIBAR, into its operational fleet. The induction ceremony, held in the bustling port city of Karachi, marks another pivotal milestone in the Pakistan Navy’s ongoing modernization drive, aimed at enhancing its maritime defense and deterrence posture in the strategically vital Arabian Sea and beyond.

A Formidable Addition to Pakistan’s Maritime Security

The PNS KHAIBAR, bearing pennant number F-282, is the second of four Babur-class corvettes being constructed under a collaborative agreement between Pakistan and Türkiye. The MILGEM project, derived from the Turkish word “Milli Gemi” (National Ship), represents a cutting-edge design focused on multi-mission capabilities, including anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASuW), and anti-air warfare (AAW). These Babur-class corvettes are designed to be stealthy, highly maneuverable, and equipped with a comprehensive suite of modern weapon systems and sophisticated sensors, making them formidable assets in contemporary naval operations.

Its induction signifies a substantial leap in the Pakistan Navy’s capacity to protect its extensive maritime interests, including the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and critical Sea Lines of Communication (SLOCs). With increasing challenges in the regional maritime domain, including piracy, terrorism, and conventional threats, platforms like PNS KHAIBAR are indispensable for maintaining stability and ensuring secure trade routes.

Advanced Features of the Babur-Class Corvettes

Each Babur-class MILGEM corvette is equipped with an array of advanced systems. This includes a robust combat management system, state-of-the-art radar and sonar suites, and an impressive arsenal. Among its key armaments are reportedly surface-to-surface missiles, a close-in weapon system (CIWS), modern torpedo launchers, and a helipad capable of accommodating a naval helicopter, further extending its operational reach and reconnaissance capabilities. The integration of such advanced technology ensures that the Pakistan Navy can effectively address evolving threats across the full spectrum of maritime warfare.

The construction of the Babur-class ships is split between Istanbul Naval Shipyard in Türkiye and Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works (KS&EW) in Pakistan. This joint venture not only facilitates the transfer of crucial shipbuilding technology but also strengthens bilateral defense ties between the two nations, promoting indigenous shipbuilding capabilities within Pakistan. PNS KHAIBAR was laid down in Karachi, highlighting Pakistan’s growing capacity in complex naval construction.

Future Outlook for Pakistan’s Naval Modernization

The induction of PNS KHAIBAR follows the commissioning of the lead ship, PNS BABUR, in 2023, and precedes the expected induction of two more corvettes, PNS BADR and PNS TARIQ, in the coming years. Once all four Babur-class corvettes are operational, they will form a powerful squadron, significantly augmenting the Pakistan Navy’s surface fleet and contributing to a layered defense strategy. This ambitious procurement and co-production program underscores Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to developing a modern, balanced, and potent naval force capable of safeguarding national interests and contributing to regional maritime security initiatives.

Defense analysts view the MILGEM project as a game-changer for the Pakistan Navy, elevating its standing among regional navies and providing a credible deterrence against potential adversaries. As Pakistan continues to invest in its defense infrastructure, the Babur-class corvettes will play a crucial role in securing its maritime frontiers for decades to come.
