INS Taragiri Commissioned in Visakhapatnam, Bolstering Indian Navy’s Stealth and Strike Capabilities

Visakhapatnam, April 3rd – India’s maritime defense capabilities received a significant boost today with the commissioning of INS Taragiri, an advanced stealth frigate, into the Indian Navy fleet. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh presided over the impressive ceremony in Visakhapatnam, marking the induction of the fourth vessel of the prestigious Project 17A class. Designed by the Indian Navy’s sophisticated Warship Design Bureau and expertly built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai, INS Taragiri represents a pivotal stride towards strengthening India’s naval prowess and achieving greater self-reliance in defense manufacturing.

Project 17A: Advancing India’s Naval Fleet

INS Taragiri is the latest addition to the ‘Nilgiri’ class (Project 17A) frigates, a series of seven state-of-the-art warships designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s operational reach and combat readiness. Building upon the success of the Project 17 (Shivalik Class) frigates, the P17A class incorporates superior stealth features, advanced weaponry, and enhanced sensor systems. Each vessel under this project is constructed using an integrated building methodology, ensuring faster completion and higher quality standards. The first three ships of the class – INS Nilgiri, INS Himgiri, and INS Udaygiri – are already at various stages of launch and trials, signifying India’s robust commitment to modernizing its naval assets and capabilities.

INS Taragiri: Engineered for Maritime Dominance

Named after a hill range in the Himalayas, INS Taragiri embodies cutting-edge naval technology. This 149-meter-long, 6,670-tonne stealth frigate is powered by a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines, allowing it to achieve speeds exceeding 28 knots. Its defining characteristic is its significantly reduced radar cross-section, achieved through advanced stealth design and specialized materials, making it incredibly difficult for adversaries to detect. Equipped with an array of sophisticated weapons and sensors, including surface-to-air missiles, anti-ship missiles, anti-submarine rockets, and a formidable gun armament, INS Taragiri is designed for multi-role operations across the full spectrum of naval warfare. Its combat management system integrates diverse threats and provides robust decision support to the crew.

Bolstering Indigenous Capabilities and India’s Maritime Security

The commissioning of INS Taragiri is a testament to India’s burgeoning capabilities in indigenous warship design and construction. With approximately 75% of its content being indigenous, including major weapon systems and sensors, the vessel proudly aligns with the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative. This commitment not only reduces reliance on foreign suppliers but also fosters growth in India’s domestic defense industry, creating jobs and technological advancements. The Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau has been instrumental in shaping this vessel, showcasing unparalleled expertise. By adding such a potent platform to its fleet, the Indian Navy significantly strengthens its ability to safeguard India’s extensive maritime interests, protect vital sea lanes, and project power across the Indo-Pacific region, ensuring regional stability and security.

As INS Taragiri begins its service, it stands as a powerful symbol of a modern, self-reliant India ready to defend its sovereignty and contribute to global maritime peace. Its induction is a clear indicator of the nation’s resolve to continuously upgrade its naval strength, ensuring that the Indian Navy remains a formidable force capable of meeting future challenges head-on.
